After a long break in sculpting, I decided to finish the mermaid which I started a while ago. I am trying to figure out this blog thing, so that I can keep my Work in Progress and be able to chat here too. I am making a mermaid.
This is what have been done so far.

When I started to smooth her upper body, I realized that I am better off stripping the clay from the lower body, so that I have something to hold on. So I did. Smoothed, baking.

The torso and the tail baked and sanded. The tail is made out of orange color clay. Here is the picture with the head module, torso module and one hand module – the second hand is baking.

Ok, here I have all my modules done and have put them together with .

All the module joints have been sculpted over and baked. Then quite a bit of sanding, then a TLS coat and bake one more time. Here is what I have now.

Thank you for the kind words, Shelah, Roser!Fins are done – well, almost. They are getting epoxied at the moment, the connections will be painted to blend with the tail painting – red and pink and orange and gold, rather bright, the inspiration being the goldfish coloring.

The fins are made out of Mother Of Pearl over red (my second attemtp – I tried yesterday and it did not work out, but for some reason it was easy today).

Cindy, Girl you are awesome!!!! You bring working with clay to a different level for me and have given me the courage to add my full body figurine’s on my sites. I love your style, with your online journal and your sharing your secrets and talent, you are a blessing to alot of us! Do you do anything professional to the point of TV? You can, look into filming, scenerity aspect, working with models, and you could really profit from your pieces, why not! Let me know if you do, and how it goes. I do santa’s and some figures mainly faces, for holidays. Keep it up Girl, you are truely talented!

Lovely! And reading your comments helps my self confidence. I am a beginner at sculpting and everyone else makes it look they they just pick up the clay and beautiful things happen first try. By telling us when something doesn’t work out quite the way you intende and you started over, it takes some of the frustration out of the process for us newbies. And she turned out beautiful, as all your work does. Thanks for the inspiration!

The most beautiful real art I have ever seen! Showing how the “ladies” are done is an inspiration to all artists and lovers of the fae. I was intrigued with the slid on limbs and the malachite draperies, along with your patience using those pesky micro beads. Remarkable and unique. Thank you so much for sharing your talent with us.

Natasha? Hello, we’ve not met yet, My name is Melissa, I’m learning about these art dolls, how to make them etc.. I saw on one of your other entries about whether to put a Fabio-like face or more innocent etc., and you asked if anyone knew of a better system to work the faces and preserve the head. Well I’ve found one that you might like (or not, I won’t be hurt.) This works particularly well for me as 1) I have a surplus of wide medicine bottles, the prescription type, and 2) between ill health and three indoor cats, theres a lot of free dust and hair flying about in my home. So, after struggling to do a face on a head mounted on a clay tool, and getting *very* frustrated with it spinning around and falling out of my hands and similar nonsense, I ended up slicing the head in half, from the top of the head, ahead of the crown, slicing down just ahead of the ears, slicing the face off the head. mI mounted this part of the head on the lid of one of these med bottles and voila’! a comfortable round thingy to hold in one hand while sculpting with the other,…I timed myself once, I played with and worked on a face this way for 10 hours straight!!! No hand fatigue, I could hold it right in front of my face (I’m very nearsighted, but my near vision, 6-12″ off my face is terrificly good), I can even do the work in bed on my back! And when I needed to take a break, I put the lid with the face on it back in the empty Rx bottle and dropped it on the bed and went off to do whatever it was I thought I needed. And it stays clean! Even keeps curious cat paws off the clay!
You might try it. You could adapt it to some other round thing that fits the hand, and perhaps a cake dome, or lid off a butter dish or one of those glass domes that people buy to protect their dolls…you’re wonderfully creative (not to mention fantastically talented and so devoted to turning out bboth quality and quantity-Oh man are you ever my HERO! Guess who I wanna be if I ever grow uo!?!?) Apr-16-08 03:13:17 PDT Delete | Report this comment

Thank you, Melissa! You are quite a genious with that idea!
You need to start your own blog! Slicing the head in 2 parts wouldn’t work for me, unforunately – there is a metal tube in the middle of the head I am also very near-sighted, but my close vision is great – I know what you talking about. Thank you so very much for the sweetest message! Apr-16-08 09:00:25 PDT Delete | Report this comment

I was just browsing looking for doll glasses and came across your site.It really amazed me.I went through all your work .I use to have a talent of making jelery and pottery but,I became disabled at 25 years of age with an incurable illness and can never get it back again.I right now am just trying to find some small eye glasses to try and put together a few center piece’s for Father Pete @ our church 60 birthday.I am having such a difficult time trying to even find them.I am even having a little difficult of a problem coming up with a design ( I guess you can call it ) as it has been so long as my talent I feel I lost.Yours is absolutly beautiful.I really hope and wish you well on your auctions and keep inspiring the people who purchase your ART as it is beautiful.God Bless.
